What is the

Mediterranean diet?

  • The Mediterranean diet is inspired by the eating habits of Greece, Italy, and Spain.

  • Overall, it includes high amounts of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and legumes, cereals and grains, fish and ‘good fats’, which are unsaturated fats like olive oil (Extra virgin olive oil).

  • Normally, consumption of meat and dairy and sweet foods is low.

  • To follow a Mediterranean diet you do not necessarily need to count calories, but you do need to have a balanced and full of variety diet. This automatically balances your meals with the right amount of fibres, carbs fats and proteins.

Why should you care?

  • Studies have found evidence that maintaining a Mediterranean diet could lead to a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes.

  • Having a diverse and moderate diet is good for your whole body as it provides all the essential nutrients you need without sacrificing your favourite foods.

few simple rules to remember

  • Prefer pasta, breads, rice or potatoes over fried foods. If possible go wholegrain.

  • Eat plenty veggies and fruits every day

  • Balance meat intake with fish

  • Use Extra Virgin Olive Oil rather than butter

  • Drink plenty of water daily.
